OpenAI launches Codex in the ChatGPT mobile app

Control Codex on your computer from the ChatGPT app, on Free and Go plans. A launch that lands as vibe-coding spreads and more developers shift from Claude Code.

On May 14, OpenAI put Codex into the ChatGPT mobile app, and the AI community had been waiting for this one. The rollout is a preview on iOS and Android and is available on the Free and Go plans. More than four million people already use Codex every week.

From the ChatGPT app on your phone, you can control the Codex app on your computer. Approve commands, follow threads, change direction, and keep work moving while you are away from your desk. The work runs where it always has. The phone is how you stay in command.

For developers, the launch lands in an interesting moment. Vibe-coding is spreading fast: you set direction, the model executes. As models grow more powerful, work is gradually moving away from the keyboard where you write every line yourself, and toward a way of working where you increasingly delegate tasks and steer agents. That means the role is shifting away from the classic code specialist and closer to a product developer: more overview of the task, more direction, and less time spent writing every line yourself.

Mobile control of Codex fits that shift. While the agent runs on your computer, you can approve, correct, and push tasks forward from your phone, thinking in problems and decisions rather than syntax. For many, that is a far more interesting way to work than even a year ago.

The race with Claude Code is tight. Anthropic led clearly a few months ago, but Codex has caught up with steady updates, and more developers are switching over. With more than four million weekly users and Codex inside the ChatGPT app, OpenAI challenges Anthropic's Claude Code.
